Airth, featured in Shark Tank India Season 4, is founded by IIT Bombay graduate Ravi Kaushik and aims to tackle some of the country’s most urgent air quality issues. By transforming existing air conditioners (ACs) into effective air purifiers, Airth presents a revolutionary, cost-effective alternative to traditional standalone devices.


The Technology Behind Airth


At the core of Airth's innovation are specially designed filters that attach to the air inlet of an AC unit. These filters use High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) technology, which can trap at least 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns or larger. Additionally, they are enhanced with antimicrobial plant-based compounds, ensuring cleaner air that's free from dust, pollen, and harmful microorganisms.


The technology does more than just purify air; it capitalizes on the existing airflow of the AC, meaning users do not need to worry about additional energy consumption. Installing the filters is straightforward, and maintenance primarily involves replacing the filters at intervals of two to three months, minimizing hassle for users.

The Shark Tank Pitch


In their Shark Tank India pitch, Ravi Kaushik and co-founder Abhimanyu Kumar sought ₹60 lakhs for 1% equity, placing Airth's valuation at ₹60 crores. They emphasized the alarming air pollution levels in India, which rank as some of the worst globally. The judges recognized the potential impact of their technology and ultimately offered ₹96 lakhs for a 3.7% stake, reducing Airth's valuation to approximately ₹27.3 crores. This deal underscored confidence in Airth’s unique solutions for the Indian market.


The Catch: Dependency on ACs


While Airth's integration with ACs is a game-changer, it does have its limitations:


  1. Seasonal Usage: The filters are reliant on the AC to operate. During the winter months, when ACs are often not in use, users must consider running their AC specifically for air purification, which can lead to higher electricity bills.


  2. Limited Scope: Airth's filters are designed for environments equipped with ACs. For homes or offices that do not have air conditioning systems, there remains a need for alternative air purifiers, possibly necessitating further investment.


  3. Maintenance Responsibility: Users need to stay proactive about filter replacements. Although this task is simple, inconsistent maintenance could lead to reduced effectiveness over time.


Airth in the Context of India’s Air Quality Crisis


India faces a serious air quality crisis, particularly in urban settings where emissions from vehicles, industries, and construction dominate the landscape. As of 2023, nearly 40% of India’s urban population lives in areas where air quality is consistently poor. Given the urgency of this issue, Airth's solution serves a dual purpose: it improves indoor air quality while allowing consumers to use appliances they already own.
